Speed cameras privatised
Recent reports suggested Justice Minister Brian Lenihan had abandoned the plan because of the prohibitive costs involved. However, Mr Lenihan brought proposals to the weekly cabinet meeting yesterday and it was agreed to proceed with the outsourcing of the speed cameras. In a statement, the Department of Justice said: “The tender process is at a very advanced stage and it is expected that contract negotiations with the preferred bidder will commence shortly.”
A department spokesman later confirmed the costs were “substantially higher than originally anticipated”.
