TUI critical of Leaving Cert Art syllabus delays

FUNDING difficulties have caused a four year delay in the introduction of a new syllabus in Leaving Certificate Art and have stalled the introduction of two new technology subjects, teachers have claimed.

More than 10,000 students take art in the Leaving Certificate each summer and a new syllabus approved by the Department of Education four years ago was aimed at modernising the approach and content of the subject.

But the Teachers’ Union of Ireland (TUI) yesterday expressed frustration at the continued delay in implementing the new course, which should begin with professional development for those who will be teaching it. There would also be funding requirements to upgrade art classrooms with suitable equipment in some second level schools.
