Teenage cyclist dies in crash with hackney
The youngster was out cycling with a friend in Cork city when the accident happened shortly after midnight in the early hours of Sunday morning.
He was struck by a car on the corner of Kent Road and Pearse Road in Ballyphehane as he was cycling out of a housing estate onto the main road.
It is understood he cycled straight into the path of an oncoming hackney and that the driver had no chance to avoid him.
He was taken by ambulance to Cork University Hospital but was pronounced dead shortly after arrival. His companion was uninjured.
It is thought Dylan’s mother was under the impression that her son was safely tucked up in bed when the accident occurred.
Dylan, from 3 Lower Pouladuff Road, Cork, will be laid to rest tomorrow after 12 noon Mass at the Church of the Assumption in Ballyphehane.
Prayers were offered for the repose of his soul at Sunday Mass.
Yesterday gardaí in Togher appealed for witnesses to the accident.
The hackney driver involved in the collision has already helped gardaí with their inquiries.
He was uninjured and there were no passengers in the taxi at the time of the accident. Superintendent Barry McPolin described it as a tragic accident and expressed his sympathy for the boy’s family.
“We are appealing to anyone who may have been in the vicinity at the time of the accident or who may have any information that could help our investigation to contact us at 021-4947120,” he said.
