THE Road Safety Authority is to take over the running of safety checks for commercial vehicles from local authorities and see new measures introduced to boost roadworthiness standards.

The move, after the proposals were approved by Minister for Transport Noel Dempsey, will see a major overhaul of the Commercial Vehicle Roadworthiness system.

The changes to the system will be based on recommendations made in a new PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC) report on the existing system.
