200,000 cigarettes seized

CUSTOMS officers have seized almost 200,000 cigarettes after three operations in Cork.

The Revenue Customs Service revealed yesterday that two Poles and a Moldovan were arrested during the operations but were released without charge.

Customs officials, carrying out surveillance on flights into Cork from eastern Europe, arrested the two Poles at Cork Airport and seized 110,000 cigarettes. The seizure was made on Wednesday.

In a separate operation, also on Wednesday, they stopped a Volkswagen Passat in Fermoy, Co Cork, and arrested a Moldovan man after seizing 60,000 cigarettes.

In a follow up operation in the north side of Cork city, a further 22,000 cigarettes were discovered, but no arrests were made.
