Security raised after Real IRA threats

POLICE in the North yesterday set up checkpoints there for the first time in several years in response to threats by dissident republicans to elevate their campaign of attacks on security targets, particularly the police themselves.

It was reported at the weekend that the Real IRA is beginning a campaign specifically targeting members of the Police Service of Northern Ireland.

Its intention is to force the redeployment of British soldiers onto the streets of the North, so “people will once again be made visibly aware we remain occupied”.
