Council strike offs

In recent years the Medical Council has struck off or sanctioned a number of doctors for a various reasons.

Michael Neary: Obstetrician at Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital, Drogheda, was struck off the Medical Council register in 2003 after a series of unwarranted hysterectomies.

This was a rare occasion when the outcome of his Fitness to Practise Inquiry was published.

James Barry: Cork GP was struck off by the Medical Council in September 2006 after being found guilty of 40 counts of professional misconduct relating to the mistreatment of eight female patients.

Paschal Carmody: A Killaloe GP was struck off the register in 2004 for supplying unauthorised medicines to patients.

He was charged with fraud, larceny and theft from patients who were terminally ill with cancer.

Prem Chandra Kumar Chhetri: The obstetrician suffered from cataracts when he performed botched procedures in Britain. Struck off the General Medical Council register in Britain and subsequently the Medical Council register here in 2007. It is unclear if Dr Chhetri worked in Ireland.

John Paul King and Ramadan Abbas Sherif Hemat: Both struck of Medical Council register in 2007 after being found guilty of professional misconduct. No details on their cases or work history have been released.
