Drivers required for cancer patients

THE Irish Cancer Society said it is looking for 130 motorists to drive cancer patients who are unable to travel alone because of where they live or the financial burden of transport.

Modelled on the Canadian Cancer Society Transportation Service, the pilot Care to Drive scheme will operate out of St Vincent’s University Hospital, Dublin, from April and could be a blueprint for a nationwide volunteer-based system.

Transport issues have been central to the debate on the designation of eight specialist cancer care hospitals.
