Roads claim three lives in two days

TWO men died after a rush-hour collision between a car and a lorry in Limerick last night.

The accident happened on the N7 between Limerick and Dublin at 5.15pm about a kilometre beyond Daly’s Cross.

Gardaí closed the road between Birdhill and Finnegan’s roundabout and diverted rush-hour traffic through Newport. Officers said they expected the road to remain closed until early today.

Earlier yesterday gardaí named a motorcyclist who died in an accident near Waterford city on Thursday evening.

He was Kenneth Scannell, 27, from Glasshouse in Slieverue, Co Kilkenny, which is on the outskirts of Waterford city.

He died after his motorcycle was in collision with a car carrying a man and a woman at Gurteen, also in Slieverue.

The two, both in their late teens, were yesterday said to be “stable” in Waterford Regional Hospital.

The man suffered serious injuries but the woman was expected to be released by today.

The accident happened on a road connecting the main Waterford-New Ross road with Waterford Port at Belview.

The stretch of road was closed while gardaí dealt with the aftermath of the collision but was re-opened yesterday morning.
