GLARING gaps exist in understanding poor school attendance and early school leavers, research concluded yesterday.

Pupils from disadvantaged backgrounds and young men are more likely to skip school, the Economic and Social Research Institute report found.

However, researchers found no national comprehensive details exist on school attendance levels, as well as the different excuses put forward.
