ONLY eight of 800 children who applied for a disability assessment in order to qualify for State aid have been examined by the HSE, it emerged last night.

Since the implementation of part two of the Disability Act in June, 822 children under five years of age have applied for assessment, 18 were deemed ineligible and eight were assessed.

However, the HSE last night insisted that assessments have commenced for approximately 75% of children. A spokesman said the HSE is undertaking to carry out the assessment within six months of the first application and is “well on target” to meet this in up to 90% of cases.
