RECREATIONAL drug users need to realise their behaviour can be directly linked to underworld criminal activity, the Taoiseach said yesterday during a lengthy debate on drugs.

During the debate on the national drugs strategy, which was prompted by the Irish Examiner’s investigation into the burgeoning drug culture, the Taoiseach Bertie Ahern said the Government would continue to focus on preventative methods.

The possibility of distributing the Irish Examiner’s supplement to schools countrywide as part of improving drugs awareness will be examined, junior minister with responsibility for drugs Pat Carey indicated.
