Call to update Constitution

LABOUR will campaign to repeal the section of the Constitution that refers to women’s “life within the home”.

The women members of the party put forward a motion saying Article 41.2.1 of the Constitution was outdated and inappropriate.

“Even when the draft Constitution was being debated in the 1930s, this clause was opposed partly on the basis that it was not even a recognition of a woman’s ‘work’ in the home, but of her ‘life’ within the home,” the motion said.
