TWO third-level colleges yesterday staged campaigns to highlight the fact that almost half of the country’s annual road deaths are in the age bracket into which most of their students fall.

Waterford Institute of Technology’s student union placed 280 pairs of shoes on the steps of the college, each representing a person killed in a road accident this year.

The college also staged a mock car accident for an audience of more than 3,000 students including an emergency services rescue. The team rushed through the campus to the scene and cut the students from the wreckage.
