OAP gives chase to armed robbers
The two masked raiders were about to enter Clonlara Post Office at about 11am on the outskirts of Limerick armed with a handgun.
But an elderly woman, according to onlookers, grabbed a brush and chased them down the street.
One witness said: “They jumped into their car and took off empty-handed.”
The two men had earlier tried to rob a post office in Garryowen at about 9.45am but again had left empty-handed when they discovered the safe was on timelock.
A short time after their foiled attempt at Clonara, uniformed gardaí in a patrol car stopped a vehicle at Corbally and arrested two youths aged 18. Both are from Limerick city.
A gun was found when the car was searched.
The two were being held last night at Henry Street Garda Station.
Meanwhile, Rocky the sniffer dog at Limerick prison, who has stemmed the flow of drugs into the prison, has been given a holiday. While away his duties are being taken over by Archie, a two-year-old labrador, and Spingle, an 18-month-old cross collie.
The dogs are being used on a trial basis and they have been hugely successful.
Visits have dropped considerably due to drugs couriers being put off by the presence of sniffer dogs.
