Government says plan will save 400 lives over 5 years

THE Government has predicted that more than 400 lives will be saved on Irish roads over the next five years if it meets the targets set in its Road Safety Strategy published yesterday.

However, the Government has postponed introducing an anticipated reduction in the drink-driving limit of 80mg alcohol per 100ml of blood for the immediate future.

Transport Minister Noel Dempsey said an advisory group established by the Road Safety Authority (RSA) would shortly make a recommendation on what would be a “socially acceptable” lower limit.
