O’Brien to become quiz master in aid of cancer research
Mr O’Brien is hoping to raise about €100,000 for the charity with the quiz which will take place in the Silver Springs Moran Hotel on November 22.
It is hoped that 200 teams from companies all over Cork will take part in the event.
The winning team will walk away with four Omega watches, courtesy of Keane’s Jewellers, and a Dermot Desmond-sponsored perpetual trophy.
Other prizes include laptops, flat-screen TVs and Canon digital cameras.
Professor Gerry O’Sullivan, director-in-chief of the research centre said: “All money raised from the event will help CCRC continue its ground-breaking research into improving the uptake of chemotherapy by tumour cells.
“This table quiz will also allow us to further continue our work on three unique clinical trials for the development of new methods of treating cancer and for the prevention of the disease. We are delighted that some 100 organisations have already entered teams for the event.”
Over the next few weeks they will be recruiting a total of 200 teams, each of which will contribute €500.
“This is going to be an entertaining evening, led very generously by Denis O’Brien. We have a number of superb prizes on offer, so we will require all teams that enter to have at least one representative of the sponsoring company or organisation as a member, with friends, workmates or clients also taking part,” the professor added.
The table quiz is sponsored by Brideview Developments Ltd and Michael Doody, managing Partner of Doody Solicitors, will be the adjudicator on the evening.
Academic staff from the Cork College of Commerce will be managing the event and collating the answers.
Since its inception in 1999 the centre has been active in developing new treatments for cancer patients through research focused on providing tangible benefits to those most in need of breakthroughs.
