CHILDREN need to get a more practical and fun understanding of maths if their performance at the subject is to improve, an expert has claimed.

Dr Eoin Gill, organiser of Maths Week, which will involve hundreds of events around the country from next Monday to Friday, said this may involve changing the curriculum taught in schools.

Irish 15-year-olds are around average in their maths proficiency compared with other teenagers in the developed world, but they are much higher ranked in terms of reading literacy.
