Man questioned in alleged sex assault

GARDAÍ say they have questioned a suspect in an alleged sexual assault which is said to have taken place in Co Cork.

Gardaí received the complaint last Monday night in Midleton.

The allegation was made by a woman in her early 20s who is from the locality. She claimed that she was sexually assaulted at approximately 9.45pm. The woman said the incident happened at a place known locally as Babywalk Park, which is adjacent to Jameson Heritage Centre.

Superintendent Flor Horan, who is leading the investigation, said that the park was sealed off for forensic examination by Garda technical experts.

Superintendent Horan said the alleged victim was taken to the Sexual Assault Treatment Unit at the South Infirmary. Detectives are awaiting results of the examinations carried out there by medical staff.

Supt Horan said that gardaí had identified a suspect and had spoken to him. However, he said it was expected that a formal interview would take place shortly.

The alleged suspect is said to be a man in his early 20s.
