DOZENS of firefighters racing to save lives and quench fires across the country are being landed with penalty points, it was claimed yesterday.

SIPTU said that “retained” or part-time officers were being given fines and penalty points while driving to get aboard fire trucks or tenders.

Attempts to reach a compromise with government departments and obtain special licences for the 2,100 retained firefighters so far had failed, said officials.
