Self-checks for breast cancer ‘ineffective’

WOMEN should no longer systematically check their breasts for lumps to detect breast cancer, according to the Irish Cancer Society.

Self-checks for breast cancer ‘ineffective’

The organisation says women who check for lumps on a monthly basis are in danger of being lulled into a false sense of security that could see delayed detection of cancers.

The charity points to international research that has shown self-examination is not effective in improving cancer detection as many women do not know how to examine themselves properly.

Naomi Fitzgibbon of Action Breast Cancer yesterday said: “This doesn’t mean women should become complacent but rather more aware of the dangers of cancer left undetected.

“We are urging women to instead be constantly aware of changes in their breasts.”

Ms Fitzgibbon is urging all woman to be constantly vigilant and says that noticing differences in your breast shouldn’t be routine, rather it should be natural.

“If you do find changes, report it, don’t ignore it, early detection is vital.”

As part of breast awareness month, Action Breast Cancer is touring Ireland with an information road show which is stationed in Tralee today and tomorrow and Clonmel on Tuesday and Wednesday, October 2 and 3.

Alternatively, women can call their confidential helpline on 1800 30 90 40.
