Shooting ‘a new low’ for society
The Garda Representative Association said their thoughts were with the garda, who is a member of the union, and his family.
GRA president John Egan described the shooting as a “callous, cowardly and despicable” act.
He said the shooting highlighted the dangers faced by gardaí in carrying out their daily duties.
“This incident illustrates the increasing level of gun crime in our towns and cities and the inherent dangers to our members and the public,” said Mr Egan. “It is a new low. A situation like this indicates where society has gone.”
He said the association had long campaigned for better security and safety for all members and that if security could be improved in situations such as this they should be taken.
A Dublin GRA representative, who declined to be named, said the Government had to respond to the shooting: “It’s appalling the way society is headed. It’s time for the Government to wake up. I’m afraid it might take a death to occur for the Government to do so.”
A spokesman for the Association of Garda Sergeants and Inspectors said: “We offer our best wishes and speedy recovery to the member involved and our thoughts are also with his family.”
He added: “Garda management will have to look at procedures in dealing with such incidents in the future bearing in mind the need to protect the health and safety of everyone.”
