David Brozovsky, from Ardnacassa, Longford, appeared before a special sitting of Longford District Court where he was charged with murdering Sharon Coughlan, 37, at Great Water Street on September 15.

Gardaí made an application for the 19-year-old to be remanded in custody.

Judge John Neilan remanded Mr Brozovsky in custody to St Patrick’s Institution to appear again in Mullingar District Court on September 27.

The judge directed that medical and psychological assessments be carried out on the defendant, in addition to a toxicological report.

A large crowd, believed to be in excess of 100, had gathered outside the during the proceedings. When Mr Brozovsky was led out of the courthouse he was heckled.

Meanwhile, in an unconnected incident gardaí are treating as suspicious the discovery of an elderly woman’s body in Co Tipperary.

The dead woman, who was in her 80s, was found in a house at Gurteenabarna, about four miles from Borrisoleigh.

Her body was found by gardaí at approximately 1pm after gardaí called to the house. When they got no response they forced in the door. Gardaí also found the dead woman’s sister, who was said to be disorientated and had injuries.

Both women were single and it is understood they were living in the house on their own.

A garda spokesman said they were treating the death as suspicious and had requested the assistance of the State Pathologist’s Office.
