Rebel pedal set to take off at weekend

CORK city will be a pedestrian-friendly zone on Saturday to promote ‘green’ modes of transport like pedal power.

Rebel pedal set to take off at weekend

Key city streets will be closed to traffic as hundreds of cycling enthusiasts take part in a 40-minute Rebel Pedal cycling circuit of the city. It is the highlight of the city’s involvement in European Mobility Week — a pan-European initiative to promote sustainable transport.

A section of St Patrick’s Street and adjacent streets will be open to pedestrians, cyclists, buses and taxis only between 11am and 5pm.

Prizes will be offered for the ‘best dressed bike’.

It is organised by Cork Environmental Forum (CEF) and will be followed by a street carnival.

CEF spokesperson, Phoebe Bright said: “With climate change and energy prices increasing we need to start making the changes in the way we use energy, we can make a good start by doing more walking and cycling and using the car less, with benefits for both the environment and our health.”

The Black Ash park and ride bus will be free and an extra park and ride service will operate from County Hall from 9.30am to 7pm.

People can still sign up to take part in the cycle parade on www.cef.ie or phone 021 4340348 for details.
