They are still waiting to question the victim who was placed in a high dependency unit after undergoing major surgery at the Mid-Western Regional Hospital.

The incident occurred at around 1am at Clarina Avenue, Ballinacurra Weston where the man was stabbed in the stomach.

He also had facial injuries but gardaí do not yet know if these were incurred in the assault.

A Garda spokesman said: “There were a number of people nearby at the time of the assault.”

Local sources said the victim had been involved in a number of previous incidents and his attacker was known locally.

Meanwhile, shortly after midnight on Tuesday a teenager was the victim of an unprovoked attack in the city centre.

The youth was walking past the Augustinian church on O’Connell Street when two men approached and punched and kicked him.

He was taken to the Mid-Western Regional Hospital.

Yesterday’s incidents are the latest in street crimes which have spiralled since the weekend.

Early on Sunday morning shots were fired into houses in Moyross and Ballinacurra Weston.

Four children escaped injury on Monday morning when a shotgun was fired into the front sitting room of their home in Sarsfield Gardens, Moyross.
