Shotgun attack on family home

A LIMERICK family, including four children, escaped injury early yesterday when a shotgun blast was fired through the front sitting room window of their home.

The shooting, the third in the city in recent days, occurred at about 1.15am at Sarsfield Gardens, Moyross.

Luckily, no one was in the front room when a gunman struck. The family were awakened by the blast and the sound of breaking glass.

Two shots were fired at a house in a neighbouring estate in Delmage Park at about 4am on Sunday.

Some time later shots were fired through the front window of a house at Lenihan Avenue, Ballinacurra Weston, on the opposite side of the city.

Meanwhile, gardaí in Roxboro Road said that a truce agreed between two feuding families in the Southill area is still holding.

One family lives in O’Malley Park and the other resides in a halting site near Southill.

A spate of shootings included one incident in which a sniper fired shots at a patrol car in O’Malley Park. A high power rifle recovered in follow up searches was matched to a bullet which lodged in the front of the garda car.

Two men were hit by gunfire.

Members of both families were called by gardaí to a meeting at Roxboro Road garda station where warnings were issued. As a result a truce was agreed.
