25% of all gun crime in Limerick, reveals top garda

AS GARDAÍ in Limerick yesterday tried to track down a sniper who opened fire on two detectives, the city’s Garda chief revealed that up to 25% of all incidents involving the illegal discharge of firearms in the State occur in the Limerick Garda division.

Chief Supt Willie Keane said: “Last year it was around 25% and this year the figure is between 20% and 25%. There is a proliferation of firearms here and the amount of firearms recovered by the Gardaí, and the amount of shootings, is testament to this.”

Chief Supt Keane said that last year Limerick Gardaí recovered more than 70 illegally-held guns.
