GLANBIA yesterday began to operate its redeployment plan for staff following the fire that destroyed its pigmeat processing plant in Edenderry, Co Offaly.

Glanbia’s plan to redeploy staff goes ahead

The company offered alternative employment to all 280 employees while it continues to assess the full impact of the fire that extensively damaged the plant early last Sunday morning.

Workers accepted the plan at a general meeting. Sixty employees have now been redeployed to the Glanbia-operated Parkmore site in Roscrea, a one-hour journey from Edenderry. Arrangements to bus them daily to and from the Tipperary site began at 6am yesterday.

Another 60 administration and sales staff continue to be employed at the Edenderry offices, which adjoin the factory but were unaffected by the fire. All other employees are being offered part-time work at the Glanbia Meats Carrick site in Roscrea.

Meanwhile, the IFA pigs and pigmeat committee chairman Michael Maguire said the provisional arrangements for pig supplies at the Roscrea plant are working, but producers will want to review them after extra work shifts begin this weekend.

He said he would be calling a meeting of Glanbia pig suppliers to review the effectiveness of the temporary arrangements in place in Roscrea.
