Knife victim praises doctors

A YOUNG man who received 600 stitches after he was sliced repeatedly in a vicious knife attack has praised the doctors who brought him back to life.

Kevin McDonagh almost died three times in the hours after he was rushed to hospital with gaping wounds and massive blood loss following the assault in the early hours of last Sunday morning.

Each time his condition hit critical, doctors at the Louth County Hospital battled valiantly to bring him back and stabilise him while simultaneously beginning the painstaking process of stitching his butchered flesh back together.

Back at home in Aishling Park in the Cox’s Demesne area of Dundalk yesterday, the weak and sedated 19-year-old recalled the terror of the attack which happened just yards from the family home as he was returning after a Saturday night out with friends.

Two of the cuts came dangerously close to his left eye and another one almost severed his nose. He also has two six-inch gashes, one stretching from his mouth to his ear and one across the side and back of his head, while another wound runs for more than a foot from his side to his stomach. Further injuries were inflicted to his chest and cheekbone.

Mr McDonagh was discovered bleeding heavily by gardaí, who had been called to what looked at first like just another Saturday night scuffle.

He was initially admitted to intensive care until doctors were satisfied he was stable enough to transfer to a ward.

At home in the care of his shocked mother yesterday, he said he was facing a long road to recovery with permanent nerve damage to his face a possibility.

He said he also had to accept that he would probably be scarred for life but he would be eternally grateful to the doctors who saved him.

A man was later arrested in connection with the attack and is due to appear before Dundalk District Court this morning.
