Elderly are among most at risk of poverty

IRELAND’S elderly have the second highest risk of poverty in the EU and almost 50% have no or only primary-level education.

That’s according to the latest figures from the Central Statistics Office published yesterday.

The figures show that 467,900 people — or 11% of Ireland’s population — in 2006 were over 65 years old — up 54,000 since 1996.
