Cause of spillage in lake probed
The alarm was raised last night after locals noticed a smell at the waterfront in the village of Ballina.
An emergency response unit from North Tipperary Co Council, consisting of specialist fire personnel and engineers along with a local coastguard unit from nearby Killaloe, are inspecting the area where the spillage happened.
A boom has been erected on the water to prevent the spread of the oil like substance, and to curtail the further discharge of any pollutants into the lake.
It is not known what quantity of the substance leaked.
A number of boats located at the nearby marina were moved because of the danger of fire or explosion.
The council is working to lessen any adverse damage to the lake, while they continue their investigation into the source of the spillage.
