MORE than 1,000 people went missing last year after being issued with deportation orders.

The State believes the vast majority of those involved left Ireland of their own accord rather than be forcibly removed from the country.

In all, 1,038 people — most but not all of whom were asylum-seekers — were issued with deportation orders in 2006 but could not subsequently be found by gardaí to be removed from the country.
