KILKENNY hurling was in mourning yesterday with the news that one of two women killed in a crash outside Thomastown was the wife of All-Ireland-winning goalkeeper James McGarry.

Vanessa McGarry, 31, a native of Thomastown but living in Butler’s Grove, Gowran, was killed instantly after a truck and four cars collided on the main Waterford-Dublin road at 9.30am yesterday. Mary Longergan, 49, from Paulstown died in hospital.

Three other people, one man, one woman and a girl, were injured in the incident — which happened in the townland of Kilfane, Thomastown. They were taken to St Luke’s General Hospital in Kilkenny.
