School supervision scheme costing €100m per year

THE cost of the supervision and substitution scheme in schools has topped €100 million per year, according to Department of Education figures.

They show that almost 46,000 primary and second level teachers are being paid €1,722 each this summer for up to 37 hours of supervision and substitution (S&S) work during the past school year.

The total cost, including payments to a small number of non-teacher supervisors and administration fees given to schools, runs to just under €90 million.
