Call for farmers to be compensated

FARMERS whose slurry-spreading activities will be affected by the extension of a buffer zone around the largest source of drinking water in Kerry should be compensated, it was urged yesterday.

The zone around Lough Guitane, near Killarney, where land-spreading is banned is to be increased in accordance with the Nitrates Regulations.

Independent Councillor Danny Healy-Rae called for some form of compensation for farmers. He was supported by South Kerry Independent Alliance Councillor Michael Gleeson who, while warning that any impact on water quality would be disastrous, felt compensation should be provided.
