Taoiseach warns of tougher times ahead

THE political urgency attached to the inflation rise was evidenced by the fact that the first statement issued by the Taoiseach, after his election success, was a sober one, warning of tougher times.

“It is clear that we are entering a period of more challenging economic conditions,” said Bertie Ahern, before adding that efforts would be needed to restore the country’s competitiveness.

“While the combination of pay increases and Budget tax cuts is protecting employees’ living standards, it is essential that we curb inflationary pressures,” he said.
