New A&E unit in city hospital gets opening date

A NEW accident and emergency unit is due to open at Cork’s Mercy University Hospital (MUH) in September.

Hospital management confirmed yesterday that the work of equipping and commissioning the €3.5 million unit, which will cater for 30,000 patients a year, are underway.

The new emergency department will replace MUH’s existing A&E which was among seven described as “unfit for their purpose” in a scathing report by the Health Service Executive (HSE) at the weekend.
