Engineers hope to reopen Jack Lynch Tunnel by Monday

The northbound bore of the tunnel has been closed since Thursday morning after a lorry smashed up to 50 lights, exhaust smoke detectors and display information boards.

The damage was said to look worse than it actually was, although engineers admitted that the cost of repairs will be far in excess of the 200,000 caused when another truck caused damage in the tunnel in February 2005.
