Huge turnout for Murphy removal

GAA representatives from all four provinces attended the removal of Con Murphy, the former GAA president, who achieved national fame through his exploits as a player, referee and administrator.

Huge crowds attended the removal from St Finbarr’s Hospital chapel in the city to St Mary’s Church in his native Innishannon. The mourners were led by Mr Murphy’s wife, Tess, his children Noel, Aine, Brendan and Maire, and his brother Dominic.

Flanked by garda outriders, the cortege made its way on to the city’s south ring road where members of the traffic corps were waiting. They stopped rush-hour traffic to allow the cortege to pass on its journey west.

The late Mr Murphy, 84, won four All-Ireland senior hurling medals with Cork in 1942, 1943, 1944 and 1946.

The funeral takes place today, following Requiem Mass in Innishannon at noon, to the adjoining cemetery.

A graveside oration will be delivered by the president of the GAA, Nickey Brennan.
