CONSUMER watchdogs last night gave a cautious welcome to an EU proposal to slash mobile phone charges for holidaymakers and other visitors using their mobile phones abroad.

Yesterday, members of the European Parliament moved a step closer to sealing a deal that would see so-called roaming charges capped at 70c a minute for outgoing calls and 10c for incoming ones.

Holidaymakers, business travellers and visitors are paying as much as €3 a minute when dialling on their mobiles in foreign countries in Europe.
