A YOUNG man was hospitalised yesterday after being attacked with a meat cleaver.

The 28-year-old was treated for injuries in St James’s Hospital after the incident.

The man was approached just before 6am while on the street at St Teresa’s Gardens in Dolphin’s Barn. He was left with a broken thumb and minor cuts after the attack.

The horrific attack could have resulted in the man’s death, according to reports. However, he managed to fend off his attacker, only receiving minor wounds to his hands and arms while defending his body.

Gardaí were still searching for the meat cleaver which was used in the assault.

No arrests were made by officers from Kevin Street Garda Station investigating the cleaver attack.

Meanwhile, a young man was recovering in hospital yesterday after a vicious beating in Dublin’s city centre. He was kicked and beaten badly in the head during an incident off Aungier Street. His condition was described as serious yesterday and he had bruising around his head area. After being brought to St James hospital, he was transferred to Naas. Gardaí said the 21-year-old was still on life support equipment yesterday. Gardaí were looking for witnesses to the incident which occurred at around 2pm on Thursday.

Gardaí said they had already spoken to one witness about the attack, but were looking for others who could help them with their inquiries. There were reports of a group of people drinking on Golden Lane, beside where the serious assault took place.
