You’re a Star Maeve recovers to sing another day

YOU’RE A Star sensation, Maeve O’Donovan was involved in a medical drama in the days leading up to last Sunday’s round of the RTÉ talent contest.

You’re a Star Maeve recovers to sing another day

Schoolgirl Maeve, 16, had to be treated over three days at the Mid-Western Regional Hospital after she lost her voice due to laryngitis.

Maeve’s mum Cathy revealed: “When she sang last Sunday night, the camera zoomed in on me and I was crying. I knew what she had been through and cried with, relief and joy that her voice had returned.”

Maeve got a common cold five days earlier and her family doctor, Dr Miriam Callanan sent her to the Mid-Western Regional Hospital when her condition worsened.

Cathy said: “By then she had no voice at all as a bout of laryngitis was complicated by her asthma condition. The specialist Dr Ahned had to carry out a number of laryngoscopies and these involved putting a camera into her throat and giving a local anaesthetic.

“It was very touch and go whether she would continue in the contest.”

Maeve had to pull out of a number of You’re a Star engagements in Dublin last week and only travelled to the Helix on Saturday.

Cathy said: “Not alone had she not sang all week, she hadn’t uttered a single word to help her voice recover. On Saturday she sang at rehearsals, but we weren’t sure if her voice would be able to stand up on Sunday.”

Not alone had Maeve to sing, she had to perform twice when she went head to head for the last place.

She got the judges nod to go forward to the next round on Sunday night.

Maeve will visit a number of schools in Cork today including St Angela’s College where her mother went to school.
