‘Domestic abuse must be seen as a serious crime’

THE Government should consider appointing a dedicated garda commissioner to ensure domestic violence is treated as a policing priority, Sinn Féin has said.

The party will table a motion in the Dáil next week calling on the Government to do more to combat the problem.

Sinn Féin justice spokesman Aengus Ó Snodaigh TD said an estimated one in five Irish women experienced domestic violence at some point in their lives.
