Woman’s body found outside car after crash
The couple, from Limerick city, were driving north on the main Cork to Mallow road after a night out in Cork when their red Ford Fiesta left the road at about 3.30am, mounted a bank and hit a ditch at Lissavoura, near the Rathduff junction.
When emergency crews arrived at the scene they found both passengers lying outside the vehicle.
The 25-year-old woman had suffered massive head injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene. Her body was taken to Cork University Hospital (CUH) for a post-mortem examination.
Gardaí were last night waiting for the body to be officially identified before releasing her name.
Her 20-year-old boyfriend was rushed to CUH with non-life-threatening injuries. He was discharged yesterday afternoon and will be interviewed by gardaí soon.
Gardaí at Gurranabraher said they have yet to establish who was driving the car at the time of the accident and appealed for witnesses to contact them.
They want to talk to anyone who saw the red hatchback Fiesta, registration 06-L, as it drove between the city and Rathduff between 2.30am and 3.30am yesterday.
In Co Meath, a young man was left fighting for his life after the car in which he was a passenger crashed near Dunsaney at around 1.15am yesterday. The 22-year-old is on life support at Navan Hospital, while a 23-year-old man is also in a serious condition in Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital in Drogheda, Co Louth. The 23-year-old man who was driving the car was arrested and later released by gardaí.
Gardaí in Donegal yesterday released the name of a man who died in a road accident just after 2am on Saturday. Sean Duddy, 20, from Gelvin Gardens, Waterside, Derry died when his car ended up in a field at Three Trees, Quigley’s Point in Co Donegal.
