Gang targets Civics for spare parts

THE boy-racers’ favourite mode of transport is now a collector’s item for a Limerick gang.

The gang have been waging a robbery blitz on souped-up Honda Civics.

In recent weeks 10 Honda Civics have been stolen in East Limerick and North Tipperary.

The latest robbery took place in Doon on Monday night last.

Honda Civics have been stolen in Murroe, Cappamore and Newport.

A garda spokesman said a Limerick city gang were taking the cars to break them up for spare parts.

The spokesman said: “The Honda Civic is very popular among the so-called boy- racer community. But spare parts are difficult to get. There is a very ready market for these parts and the Limerick gang have decided there is a money making opportunity by stealing Honda Civics and breaking them up for spare parts.”

Honda Civic owners have been advised to take extra precautions, such as using wheel locks. “When parking them in a driveway, another car should be parked outside to block a quick escape,” he said.
