A PILOT who witnessed a serious incident in which a Ryanair aircraft aborted a landing near Cork Airport last year has described how he believed the plane with 134 passengers and crew on board was going to crash.

The holder of a private pilot’s licence who was on board a Cessna light aircraft, flying behind the Boeing 737 on June 4 last year, said he and two other qualified pilots on board fully expected the larger plane to hit the ground near Bishopstown as it attempted to gain height for another approach.

“All three of us were braced, expecting the bang of 737 impacting the hill north of the runway,” remarked the pilot who was one of the few eye-witnesses to the event.
