Detectives believe the thieves stole the glasses to order and think there may be a connection to a similar robbery in Co Tipperary before Christmas.
“The thieves seemed to know exactly what they were looking for because they stole designer labels, such as Calvin Klein, Prada, Georgio Armani, Chanel, Ray-Ban and Oasis, to name but a few,” a garda spokesman said.
The robbers made off after breaking open a back door at O’Mahony’s Opticians at New Square, Mitchelstown.
Gardaí say the thieves are likely to have struck last Thursday morning, probably between midnight and 6am.
They particularly want to hear from anybody who might have noticed anything suspicious along Printer’s Lane.
Gardaí believe the glasses may be sold abroad. But, on the off-chance they are not, they want to hear from anybody who is offered them in unusual circumstances in the coming weeks, especially if they are offered for sale by a stranger in a pub.
“You could say this was a particularly neat job. They took approximately 450 pairs of glasses and a number of these designs retail at more than €300 each,” the garda spokesman said.
He said the robbery bore similarities to one which took place in Cashel before Christmas and said it would be advisable for all opticians to check that their security arrangements are adequate.
Anybody with information about the robbery is asked to contact Mitchelstown garda station at 025-84833, or Fermoy garda station at 025-82100.
