Ailbe Lonergan, of 12 Quill Street, Tralee, was brought before Killarney District Court and remanded in custody to Cork Prison. He is due to appear at Tralee District Court today.

He is charged with the murder of Michael Lonergan, 34, at Baloonagh Estate, Tralee.

Detective Sergeant Fergal Patwell gave evidence of arresting the accused at New Road, Tralee, and subsequently charging him at 7.25pm on January 1. When asked if he had anything to say after being cautioned, the accused replied ‘no comment.’ Solicitor Nuala Liston, for the accused, said she had no questions, but applied for free legal aid. Replying to Judge James O’Connor, she said her client was single and unemployed. Judge O’Connor granted free legal aid.

Lonergan appeared in court dressed in a dark shirt and black pinstripe jacket. His right arm was heavily bandaged.

As he was leaving the courthouse under garda escort, some bystanders who had gathered outside shouted abuse.

Michael Lonergan died in Kerry General Hospital, Tralee, late on December 31, after being admitted some hours earlier with stab wounds sustained in a row during a party at his home in Baloonagh Estate.
