THE disappearance of male teachers from primary classrooms is to be tackled in the coming weeks by a union campaign aimed at school-leavers.

As next summer’s Leaving Certificate students prepare to choose their college courses for next autumn, the Irish National Teachers’ Organisation (INTO) has teamed up with guidance counsellors to raise awareness in the profession.

A key focus of the campaign is to get more young men to pursue primary teaching as a career, following the steady decline in numbers in recent years.
