CONFLICTS of interest like those exposed by the Moriarty tribunal between AIB and Charles Haughey could still happen, the Green Party warned last night.

The Green’s finance spokesman Dan Boyle called for tighter legislation to stop financial institutions appearing to attempt to influence powerful clients through favours.

The Moriarty tribunal report found AIB made an “indirect payment” to disgraced former Taoiseach Mr Haughey by accepting £750,000 to settle his £1 million-plus debt. Mr Boyle warned that such “sweetener” deals may happen again.
